The High Performance of the UFO LED Grow Light

People who enjoy indoor gardening are looking for good, bright light for their plants. In addition, they want light fixtures that are light in weight, yet offer excellent light coverage. All of these great features are available in the UFO LED. Although it looks small and round, rather like an unidentified flying object, this grow light provides amazing light at a cost-effective price.

Roughly the same size as a bread plate, the UFO LED light runs on only eighty watts of electricity yet puts out more bright light than a four-hundred watt high pressure sodium or metal halide lamp. HID, or high intensity discharge, lights, on the other hand, require seventy to eighty percent more electricity to run them at the same light capacity as the UFO LED.

Not only does it use a fraction of the energy that other grow lamps use, but it also runs very cool. This is because the UFO LED comes with three fans built in, so you will not need to purchase air-cooled ducting or reflectors and will dramatically reduce your air conditioning costs as well. A cooler running UFO LED light also ensures that you will not burn your tender plant foliage, a common problem with other types of grow lights.

Your plants will flourish under these small but very powerful lights. A UFO LED provides your indoor garden with eight times the light output that you would normally receive with an HPS or MH grow light. It does this through the use of several one-watt LEDs focused toward your plants, the light spectrums of the UFO LED grow light are in color temperatures and tones that your plants can actually use for photosynthesis. The light specrtrums output by the UFO LED is suitable for all phases of plant growth

With all of this remarkable lighting capacity, it is also encouraging to learn that the UFO LED light will last for eighty thousand and more hours, or the equivalent of seven to ten years of exceptional performance. The coverage area of this light is three feet by three feet, allowing you to grow a wide array of plants in that large growing space.

The UFO LED light is lightweight and very easy to use. It does not require any extra wiring or complicated setup, but can be used in the normal light sockets found in your home or greenhouse. So for high performance for low cost, the UFO LED grow light is a perfect choice. The UFO LED light is the indoor gardener’s best friend!

Nutrients That Aid In Heavy Metal Detox

You ingest heavy metals into your body through drinking polluted water, dental filings, breathing contaminated air or even eating foods that may be exposed to dangerous heavy metals. They are harmful because they can adversely affect your brain functions and reduce your mental clarity. Examples of these metals include mercury, lead, aluminum, arsenic and cadium.

Chelating agents are used in a heavy metal detox to get rid of these unwanted metals. These agents create a chemical bond with these metals to make them less active and combine with the bloodstream. Heavy metal detox happens when you successfully excrete them through your kidneys and liver.

You will need the assistance of a naturopathic doctor for a heavy metal detox. On a daily basis, you can also obtain some natural chelating agents from food sources. Or you can also buy them in supplement form from your local health store. Here are some examples of chelating agents that come from natural food or in the form of supplements:

* Milk Thistle is also known as silymarin. It helps your liver detoxify and in the process, eliminate heavy metals. Milk thistle also protects the membranes of red blood cells.

* Chlorella is a mild chelator. Chlorella has a 3-layered cell wall that contains cellulose microfibrils, which aids in heavy metal detox. Green algae contains cholorella. You can obtain this all important nutrient in the form of a drink from juice bars or simply make one yourself.

* Methionine is a natural occurring chelating agent that supplies sulfur in the body. It helps in heavy metal detox by increasing the production cysteine and lecithin for the liver and for good kidney health.

* N-Acetyl-L-Cysteine (NAC) increases cysteine and glutathaione production. It is also a source for sulfur. Fresh garlic is a common source of NAC. If you find it hard to eat garlic because of the pungent smell, there are also garlic supplements that you can buy.

*Mega H increases the conductivity of the water in your body and lowers the surface tension of cell fluids. These functions help in the easy removal of toxins from your body.

* Vitamin B6 is advised if you have undergone dental procedures or has dental fillings. It prevents the contamination of heavy metals in the body.

* Magnesium is important for the proper functioning of your immune system and body enzymes. Great sources of magnesium are found in pumpkin, Brazil nuts, spinach and in fish like halibut.

* Cilantro is helpful in removing heavy metals, including mercury, from your body. Cilantro aids in restoring the normal functions of body cells. You can easily sprinkle cilantro in your salads and soups.

A Brief Introduction to Methods of Hydroponic Production

Hydroponics literally means “water working” however, in practical use, it means growing plants in a nutrient solution without soil. The hydroponic science had proved that soil isn’t required for plant growth but the elements, minerals and nutrients that soil contains are. Soil is a place where the plant roots traditionally live and a base of support for the plant structure. Soil is simply the holder of the nutrients. By eliminating the soil, you eliminate soil borne disease and weeds and gain precise control over the plant’s nutritional diet. In a hydroponic solution, you provide the exact nutrients your plants need in precisely the correct ratios so they can develop stress-free mature faster and, at harvest, are the highest quality possible.

In commercial production, the two primary growing methods are NFT (Nutrient Film Technique) and drip (also known as substrate). There are a number of variations of these methods and also several others including the float system, ebb and flow system, Aeroponics and passive. The biggest difference between the NFT systems and drip systems is the use of a growing medium. In an NFT system, the plant roots are in a channel where a thin film of nutrient solution passes, keeping them moist but not water-logged. In a drip system, the plant roots are in a growing medium such as Perlite or Rockwool and the nutrient solution is dripped onto the medium to keep it moist.

NFT (Nutrient Film Technique)

With the NFT (also known Nutrient Film Technique) technique, the plants are grown in channels (also called gullies) in which the nutrient solution is pumped through. The plant roots are kept moist by the thin film of nutrient solution as it passes by. Ideally, the bottom of the roots is exposed to the nutrient solution while the top are kept moist but not water-logged.

With the development of on-demand dosing equipment, a nutrient reservoir can automatically be adjusted and, with proper aeration and pH adjustment, the system can effortlessly be kept fresh for weeks at a time. Most NFT channels are fed continuously at a rate of approximately 1 liter per minute. Since the plant roots are not in a growing medium, it is crucial that they are kept moist at all times. In most NFT systems, the nutrient solution is mixed in a primary reservoir, cycled through the channels and back to the reservoir.

NFT is ideal for short term crops like lettuce, leafy crops and herbs. In many locations around the world, Larger NFTchannels are used for long term crops such as tomatoes and cucumbers. One great benefit of NFT, especially for leafy crops, is that no washing is necessary since there no growing medium and no soil, and hence the crop is clean. Growers, chefs, grocers and consumers all appreciate this.

Most growers have found flat bottomed channels or gullies provide greater surface area for root development and oxygen uptake, resulting in better, faster plant development. NFT channels are usually set up on waist-high stands that slope slightly to allow the nutrient solution to drain to one end.

Aeroponics

Though Aeroponics is a unique way of growing; it is not a common means of commercial production. Aeroponics is the method of growing where the plant roots are constantly misted with a nutrient solution. Designs include an A-frame with boards on each side, plant plugs set in each side and a mister between the boards spraying the roots. A round, large diameter PVC pipe set vertically with plant plugs all they way around and a mister mounted inside is another way to set up an Aeroponic system.

Ebb and Flow

The Ebb and Flow method of hydroponics simply floods a growing area for 5 or 10 minutes and then the nutrient solution drains away. The nutrient solution is stored in a reservoir that can be located under the grow table. In an Ebb and Flow, the plant roots are usually grown in a medium of Perlite, Rockwool or expanded clay pebbles. Ebb and Flow is common in hobby systems but not often found in commercial production. This is also know as flood and drain.

Float

The float system can be an economical means of hydroponic crop production in areas where raw materials are limited and manufactured hydroponic systems and components are not availableFloat systems take advantage the surface of the nutrient solution. Most float systems are long, rectangular reservoirs built out of cement or wood and lined with a durable, poly liner. Holes are cut in a foam board which floats on the surface of the water and plants in net pots are set in the holes. The plant roots dangle in heavily aerated nutrient solution.

Passive

A passive system does not use timers or pumps to flood the root zone. The roots usually draw what they need by dangling into the nutrient solution. Being a slow growing system, passive system is not as productive as the other methods discussed. Passive hydroponic systems are sometimes used by hobbyists.

Drip (Substrate)

Long term crops like tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers are grown using the Drip system. In this system, the nutrient solution is delivered to the plants through drip emitters on a timed system. Depending on the stage of development of the plant and the amount of available light, the emitters are usually scheduled to run for approximately 10 minutes/hour. The drip cycle provides the plants with fresh nutrients, water and oxygen, thus flushes the growing medium.

Commercially, in a drip system, Perlite or Rockwool are the most common mediums for the plant growth. The biggest variables in a drip system are in the growing medium and the container that holds that medium. Perlite is often bagged in thin, plastic sleeves. Holes are cut in the bag and plants, usually 3-4, are set in with the roots growing down into the Perlite. Recently, a bucket system has been developed to contain Perlite for drip systems. Each bucket holds loose Perliteand one or two plants. In either of these methods, a slot or hole is cut in the container to allow excess nutrient solution to run out. A drain line below the bag or bucket collects the excess.

The Perlitetray is the another method of a drip system that is becoming popular for lettuce and herb production. Usually it is about 24 inches wide by 10—14 feet long. An aluminum tray, coated with a non-toxic material, is filled with Perlite and set on a gentle slope of 1-inch to 10-feet. The nutrientsolution is continuously dripped in at the higher end of the tray and allows trickling through the Perlite to the other end. Basically, this system is a combination of drip and NFT techniques.

In this case, there is no need for a large nutrientreservoir tank or the periodic dumping of used nutrient. Injectors are used, in most drip systems, to add nutrient concentrates to water when the feed cycle starts.

The Low Down On Passive Hydroponics Garden Setup:

Plants absorb all needed elements from water and soil. A system, in which all nutrients are provided to the plants by water, is called hydroponics system. There are two methods in hydroponics gardening. First is an active hydroponics gardening system, and second is Passive gardening system.

Both methods are good for indoor hydroponics gardening. But the success of the method depends on your strategy. It means which method you use and how will be your management skills you apply to it. It is an attempt to make available the information about how to set a Passive Hydroponics Garden.

Material for Passive Garden:

A Passive Hydroponic Gardening System requires following items and materials. Plant container with drainage whole, moisturized soil, hydroponic absorption wick, wooden table with a center whole, plastic buckets etc. material can use in Passive Garden. Make sure that all the material is enough and will proper for everything. For instance table should be slightly smaller than the plant containers. Or peat moss should be good.

Garden Setup:

Using wick system in your garden is very good idea. It is easy and simple to fulfill your desire. Set hydroponic wick into growing container. Before setting wick decide which side do you want to use or which side should be useful for your convenient.

Follow the lines of container and bottom of the container through drainage holes. Size of container should be six to eight inches above reservoir buckets and that should be provide proper nutrients to the container. Hydroponic wick should be long and adequate to reach reservoir. Then fill up containers with soil, water and other required material up to two inches bellow the container rim.

Put the container on proper place according to wick system. Before placing container arrange table and then put the container near the table. Set two other buckets underneath the table so that the water will fall into the reservoir container. Reservoir container and plant container will be placed on proper distance.

Arrange drainage system in a way that water should be reach to both containers. And make sure that you will have fill up the container with water every day whenever required. Then put a plant in a container and add other nutrients, solution with plants. It is easy to maintain and operate every thing.

Passive method is simpler than the active method. Active method requires more concentration. The passive method is not as complicated as the active method because the passive technique requires less property and material.

Herb Gardening With your Children

Herb gardening with children is a delightful way to engage children in gardening as a hobby. Both your teenagers and young children will enjoy herb gardening. Teach them about the history of herbs and their many uses. Not only will they get a feeling of satisfaction about growing the herbs but they will feel a sense of contribution to the family when the herbs are used in cooking. They will be amazed at what they have accomplished through a mere seed.

For centuries herb gardening has been popular. In addition most of the very popular herbs are disease resistant and can overcome very arid climates. There are two advantages to an herb garden hobby. One, they can be planted indoors at any time and if you want to plant outside they only take a few weeks to sprout giving your children a sense of wonderment quickly. So if the kids are bored during the cold months being cooped in side an indoor herb garden is perfect. Choose fragrant smelling herbs or herbs that will spice up your food. Imagine how much fun they will have when they sprinkle fresh basil from their garden on their pizza.

To begin an herb garden with your children you will need to get some easy to find basic items. Start small with six pots that have holes in the bottom. Have the kids paint the pots for an additional activity. Next you will need either seeds or already started plants from your nursery center or from the internet.

Only a few basic easy to find items are necessary to begin an herb gardening project with your children. The most popular herb plants for children are Lavender, Sage, Mint, Coriander, Basil, Parsley and Oregano. You will need some good potting soil also available at the nursery center. Have on hand some plastic wrap, Popsicle sticks, a marking pen and poster paints if the kids are going to paint the pots.

Once you have gathered your supplies it is time to plant. Fill the pot with soil and have the kids scatter a few seeds over the top (check to make sure the seeds don’t overlap). Have them gently place soil over the seeds and light tamp down. Plant more then a few seeds since some seeds won’t sprout.

Water the soil but don’t drown it. Herbs do no like to have “wet feet”. However do not allow them to dry out. With your marking pen, label the Popsicle stick with the name of the herb and insert into the pot.

To conserve on moisture cover the pot with plastic wrap. Make sure you uncover them for fresh air every other day so mildew cannot form.

Now it is time to find a sunny spot to place your herb garden. Herbs need 4 to 6 hours of sunlight a day. In two to six weeks, depending on the herbs you have chosen, your seeds will begin to germinate. Off with the plastic wrap now that they are ready to grow.

The kids will love watching them grow and smelling their fragrances. It’s time to enjoy your herb garden with your children.

Once the kids have been successful in this project you may wish to branch out and start growing some other herbs. This project of herb gardening with your children will truly inspire your kids with a love and appreciation of gardens and herbs.

What nutrients are easily absorbed and can move through the body dissolved in water?

Have a test tomorrow. Just wondering what nutrients are easily absorbed and can move through he body dissolved in water.
If the question says "nutrients", could the answer be "glucose" or is her teacher wanting more than one answer? Does glucose move through the body dissolved in water? Thanks for helping us figure this out.

glucose is absorbed directly
table sugar is disaccharide made of glucose and fructose, very little digestion
starch is a polymer of sugars
glucose a sugar, is fund in many foods
salt is absorbed directly
alcohol is absorbed directly
sugar and salt ae water soluble
fats and proteins require more digestion

Gardeners – Have You Ever Bought Gardening Supplies Online?

I’m looking into opening an online gardening store…
Have you, or any other gardeners you know, bought any of your supplies online? What type of supplies are you likely to buy online and what would you rather just go to the local store for?
Thanks for your help! :)

I’ve bought online on Ebay. Seedling heat mats, seed trays, rooting hormones, plant markers, etc. You need to compare what’s out there–and price your products competitively. My daughter sells on Ebay and does quite well (not gardening supplies).
