My Cheap CFL Grow Light Fixture Results in Hydroponics (Lettuce and Beans)
This is a video showing hydroponic lettuce growing under the lights that I made in my other video “How To Build a CFL Grow Light Fixture – CHEAP!”. I’ve been making a video from seed to harvest using these lights along with a hydroponic system shown in this video. I’ll post that as soon as it’s all together after my harvest. Im using a 6500k 23 watt CFL to grow a single plant at the moment is that adequate lighting? (it was the highest wattage full 6500K I could find or can I use the lower spectrum bulbs as well?)

I was testing it out and lettuce as well as beans grow fast. Also I grew these while the temps outside were around 20 degrees F. In the near future it may be good to know about growing food. The supermarket may not always be around or food may cost triple. Times are changing.

Thanks for the reply. I wasnt planning on having the bulb pointed down. What I meant to ask was… how much of a gap should there be between the bulb and the aluminum dryer vent tubing that you are using as a reflector?

I read in MAKE Magazine the heat kills CFL bulbs. Keeping a bulb pointed down will shorten it’s life due to heat. It’s best to keep CFL bulbs shining on side. I have never had a high powered CFL die for my plants. I have a ceiling fan in my kitchen that has CFL bulbs pointed down and they die every few months. I’d use a little fan if you have an expensive bulb. You most likely have 90 days to return at these stores so HOLD THAT RECEIPT!

I have 2 bulbs from Home Depot that are 2700K. They are 68 watt/300watt equal. You need the 6700K bulbs for the Veg stage. The 2700K are for the bloom stage. I have huge bell pepper plants that are blooming with fruit under 2 2700K and 2 6500K bulbs in combo. I’ll post a CFL light video soon that shows many different bulbs from the various retail stores. I buy them as the stores get better ones. Hopefully this week I’ll have it together as well as florescent bulbs.
